Svenskt ambulansflyg
“Kommunalförbundet Svenskt Ambulansflyg” (ICAO: SWE, Callsign: SWEDECARE) is an association of all healthcare regions of Sweden, which manages a fleet of several air ambulances. The entity provides the emergency medical services to all hospital members and coordinates the medical response through its airplanes. The headquarters are in Umeå at the Norrland University Hospital, but the aircraft are based in dedicated facilities at Umeå Airport, Stockholm-Arlanda Airport and Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport.
The organisation around the Swedish Ambulance Flight (Svenskt ambulansflyg) was established in 2016 as a result of the vision of “Healthcare on wings” (“Vård på vingar”) drafted some years back. The idea was to built Swedish national coordination centre for airborne ambulance medical care, managing ambulance airplanes and helicopters and providing emergency medical personnel on demand. The first four airplanes were delivered to Svenskt Ambulansflyg in August 2021 and the remaining two later that year. The Swedish Ambulance Flight was fully operational in all 21 health regions of Sweden from 21st of February 2022. The organization employs round 50 dedicated pilots, fraction of whom perform also administrative tasks.
Aircraft type
The aircraft chosen as the main workhorse of the organization, was the light business jet Pilatus PC-24, produced by the Swiss company “Pilatus Aircraft Ltd”. This is a twin-engine airplane, powered by two Williams FJ44-4A turbofans, providing about 15 kN thrust each. The basic model was heavily customized to be able to accommodate up to three heal-care beds. The cabin can be quickly adapted according to a specific need, to provide instruments for intensive care, baby incubator, ECMO apparatus or equipment for transport of organs for transplantation and the accompanying team of medical personnel. The Swedish Ambulance Flight purchased six Pilatus PC-24 airplanes, with an option for another 4 aircraft.
