General history and facts:

”M/S Västan” is a passenger ship built in 1900 by Motala Verkstads Nya AB for Ångbåts AB Nya Svartsjölandet, Svartsjö, Sweden. Originally the craft was propelled by a steam engine. The ship was ordered on 23rd of September 1899, launched on 23rd of March 1900 and delivered to the first customer on 19th of May 1900. The original name of the vessel was “Nya Svartsjölandet”. The first passengers tour commenced on 21st of May 1900 on the route Malmvik - Tappström - Stockby - Stenhamra - Kungsberga - Slut - Ådö - Säbyholm and since then it serves the passenger’s traffic in the Stockholm's archipelago. In 1931 the vessel was re-sized. On 6th of December 1937 it was sold to Waxholms Nya Ångfartygs AB, changed name to “Västan” with a home port at Vaxholm harbour. It was operating on the route Stockholm - Björkö - Väddö kanal – Östhammar. In 1953 the original steam propulsion was exchanged with the diesel motor model Alpha 406 FLO, 360 hp (265 kW). In 1956, Västan was re-sized to length of 31,15 m and beam of 5,91 m. In 1964 it was sold to Waxholms Ångfartygs AB, Sweden. In 1967 the engine was changed to B&W Alpha 405-24-VO, 425 hp (313 kW). In 1984 it was enlarged with an additional meter to the current measurements. In 1994 the operation of Västan was granted to Stockholms Sjötrafik AB. The sun deck was renovated in 2002 and in 2004 the crane for cargo was removed from the front deck. On 16th of April 2007 the operation of Västan was taken by Blidösundsbolaget AB. In 2012 the main engine was exchanged with Volvo Penta D16-340, 340 hp (250 kW). On 30th of August 2012, Västan was listed as a historic Swedish ship (K-marked). After changing several operators in 2019 the management of the ship went back to Blidösundsbolaget AB, Stockholm. Since 2020 Västan serves the route Stockholm - Vaxholm - Södra Grinda - Sandhamn in the Stockholms archipelago.
