Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA

”Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA” is a low-cost airline registered in Norway and operating in Europe under the name “Norwegian” (IATA: DY, ICAO: NOZ, Callsign: NORDIC). The company “Norwegian Air Shuttle” was founded on 22nd of January 1993 to replace the regional-flights branch of “Braathens” in Norway. Initially, these intra-Norwegian flights were served by the subsidiary of “Braathens”, called “Busy Bee”. However, in December 1992 the smaller company “Busy Bee” filed for bankruptcy and three of its Fokker 50 aircraft were consequentially leased to “Norwegian Air Shuttle”. This was the start of the “Norwegian” with operations from Bergen Airport to several regional centers with most of the former personnel of “Busy Bee”.

Norwegian noseIn the next years, “Norwegian Air Shuttle” expanded its fleet with additional aircraft and destinations. By the turn of the millennium, the company had six Fokker 50 and more than 20,000 flights with half a million passengers transferred. After 2000, “Norwegian Air Shuttle” invested in one more Fokker 50, but also bought the helicopter-operation branch of “CHC Helikopter Service”. In 2001 some regional routes were canceled and the traffic on others heavily reduced. The reasons for that were complex and at least partially due to the purchase of “Braathens” by “Scandinavian Airlines System” (SAS). SAS aimed that their own “SAS Commuter” subsidiary will take over the operations of the “Norwegian Air Shuttle”, although the contracts between “Braathens” and “Norwegian Air Shuttle” were valid for another 18 months. On 7th of January 2002, “Norwegian Air Shuttle” started to operate on the route Stavanger–Newcastle, in April the company announced that it will re-focus as a low-cost domestic carrier for the business and from 1th of September 2002 it re-branded as “Norwegian”.

The new approach of “Norwegian” was to serve additional Central European routes and more home destinations. In April 2007 “Norwegian” bought the low-cost airline “FlyNordic” from “Finnair” to become the largest low-cost carrier in Scandinavia. In August the same year “Norwegian” ordered 42 brand-new Boeing 737-800 and leased several old Boeing 737-800 from January 2008. By June 2011, “Norwegian” owned 78 aircraft of the same model, with another 12 options for new orders. Several key destinations in Scandinavia were covered by that time in addition to New York City, Bangkok and places in South America and Africa.

Norwegian tail”Norwegian” placed the largest order of aircraft in European history on 25th of January 2012. Tback then the company ordered 22 Boeing 737-800, 100 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 100 Airbus A320 neo. In the next couple of years, “Norwegian” served routes from London Gatwick airport to destinations in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Croatia, routes from Chicago Rockford International Airport to USA, Mexico and the Caribbean. In 2017 several destination in Asia were covered. At that point, “Norwegian” was regarded as the largest airline in Scandinavia.

The next year, 2018, the company changed the financial strategy from growth to profitability. Consecutively in 2019 there were major restructuring of the crew bases and aircraft. The order for all Airbus A320 neo was canceled. The whole fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 was grounded by advice of European Union Aviation Safety Agency due to safety concerns after the crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 on 29th of October 2018 and the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on 10th of March 2019. In the period of the COVID-19 pandemics, the company was hit by the global decline of commercial flights and also by the financial difficulties into finding new investors. In April 2020, “Norwegian” filed bankruptcies in several subsidiaries, ask the Norwegian government for a loan and ultimately converted debt into equity in May the same year. There was a credit guarantee from the Swedish government as well. In 2021 during the restructuring of the company two subsidiaries were establish, one in Norway (“Norwegian Air Shuttle AOC AS”) and the other in Sweden (“Norwegian Air Sweden AOC AB”). The flights under the new subsidiaries started on 31st of October 2021, with the respective ICAO airline codes (NOZ and NSZ) and callsigns (“NORSEMAN” and “NORLIGHT”). The callsigns were changed in March 2022 to “NORDIC” for the Norwegian branch and “REDNOSE” for the Swedish subsidiary.

Fleet of “Norwegian”

As of 2023 the fleet of "Norwegian" includes only Boeing aircraft from two models, Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737 MAX 8. All aircaft owned by the both subsidiaries of “Norwegian” are presented in the next sections.
