Watercraft range from lightweight canoes carried by one person to immense ocean-going ships designed to move thousands of passengers or enormous quantities of cargo. There is no single system that places every watercraft into one universally accepted category. The distinction between a boat and a ship is mostly traditional rather than mathematical. Displacement hulls

Construction materials
Traditional craft may be built from wood, including planked frames, strip construction or moulded veneers. Steel dominates large commercial ships because it is strong, repairable and cost-effective.
